The Dynasty remains unvanquished. Not the Ming or Duck one, mind you. That would be Lady Antebellum’s Dave Haywood and Charles Kelly’s ping-pong doubles team, which fully lived up to its name at the conclusion of the trio’s unique Ping Pong & Songs event today (June 9) at CMA Music Festival.
Table tennis hopefuls battled it out over the last couple days at Music City Center, paying a fee (benefiting the group’s LadyAID initiative ) for a chance to compete in the final with Dave and Charles. At the end, it was a dangerous-looking team from El Paso that got to take them on, having beat their semifinalist competitors handily.
Before the main event, Charles and Dave signed autographs and posed for pictures with fans gathered to watch them play. Charles tried to downplay their abilities. “We’re really not that good,” he joked. “It was just an idea.”
But they were indeed that good, routing their opponents in the first game of the best-two-out-of-three series. In the second, they battled from behind to clinch the win after an extended back-and-forth tiebreak. Good sports that they are, Dave and Charles awarded their competitors with prizes and posed for photos.
And if you’re interested, the table that was used for the game has been signed by the guys and will be up for auction, also benefiting LadyAID.
