John Strait, 91, the father of country superstar George Strait, passed away today (June 4). George’s dad was a retired schoolteacher who had been living in Pearsall, Texas, where George was raised. The cause of death has not been reported, but the Strait patriarch had been hospitalized for a month.
“We are grateful for the time over the last few weeks we were able to spend with Daddy before he passed away,” George said in a statement. “I want to thank everyone for their prayers and support during this difficult time as we mourn our family’s loss.”
John Strait was divorced from George’s mother when George was quite young. He spent much of his adult life raising George and his brother Buddy. “He seldom even dated,” George remembered in the book George Strait: The Story of Country's Living Legend. “He taught school and worked on the ranch. It was only after Buddy and I got out of the house that he cut loose and started having some fun again.” George also recalled that his dad was a religious man who raised the boys in a Christian atmosphere.
George performed on Saturday at the Alamadome in San Antonio in front of 73,000-plus fans as part of his farewell tour.
Funeral services will be reserved for friends and family only. In lieu of gifts, donations can be made to The Jenifer Strait Memorial.
We at Country Weekly send our condolences to George and his family.
