Before Chris Young’s run of successive hits, he had established himself as a popular live entertainer by entertaining the beer-and-sweat-soaked crowds in Texas and beyond. Yet his singles (like the excellent “Tomorrow”) have consistently leaned toward the more sensitive side of his personality.
Which in some way might explain Chris’ rowdy new single, “Aw Naw,” slated to appear on his upcoming fourth album. It starts with a four-on-the-floor slab of diet AC/DC riffage, before stumbling into lyrics about needing to leave the bar before it gets crazy because he has to get up early in the morning.
But somebody buys another round and suddenly it’s, aw naw, party time and all hell breaks loose. There’s a hot girl, there’s the obligatory shouts-out to Patrón and Bacardi and blue jeans, though mercifully no pickup truck or dirt road.
You’ve heard this particular theme many times before and there’s nothing added to it here, but the earworm chorus is likely to generate spins on your favorite radio station.
Perhaps the most frustrating aspect of this song is the fact that Chris Young is actually a gifted singer with an incredibly rich and expressive voice. He can sing up-tempos and ballads with equal ease.
Frankly, he deserves better. To “Aw Naw,” I say, “No thanks.”
