The Voice put the competition on pause for a moment when coach Blake Shelton and wife Miranda Lambert delivered a moving musical dedication to their home state, tornado-devastated Oklahoma. Performing “Over You,” which they wrote together in memory of Blake’s late brother, Miranda sang her heart out while Blake accompanied her on guitar. In place of the #TheVoice hashtag on the bottom of the screen, information on how to donate to the American Red Cross appeared throughout the night.
While that was surely the finest moment, there was a lot of great music before host Carson Daly—in the last two minutes of the show—revealed which two artists were going home. Shakira and her sexy locks joined Sasha Allen and Kris Thomas on a beautiful rendition of “I’ll Stand By You” by the Pretenders. Team Blake raised spirits with “Mountain Music” by Alabama. Usher got a lounge vibe going (and a huge reaction just for taking off his coat) with Burt Bacharach’s classic “The Look of Love,” which he crooned with Michelle Chamuel and Josiah Hawley. And the ladies of Team Adam paid homage to the ’70s during an energetic performance of “I’ve Got the Music in Me” by the Kiki Dee Band.
Also packed into the hour were appearances by Fast & Furious 6 stars Michelle Rodriguez and Vin Diesel, who showed up to promote their movie (opening May 24, in case you didn't know) after perhaps having one or two of Blake’s “special lattes.” (Or were they really that happy to be on The Voice?) We also got another confessional montage. After being asked what the contestants and mentors would do if they weren’t singers, we learned Danielle Bradbery has aspirations of doing hair and makeup for Blake; Sheryl Crow dreams of motocross racing; Adam Levine fancies himself a secret agent; and Zach Swon not only can imitate the Scream mask, but also does a spot-on Elmo.
Unfortunately, two of the singers may have to rely on their fallback plans, because Usher’s Josiah and Shakira’s Kris didn’t get enough votes to stay in the competition. Not really a surprise, considering neither wowed the coaches last night. What is a bit of a shocker is the fact that Teams Adam and Blake remain intact going into the Top 8. Will they wipe out Teams Usher and Shakira next week? Um, not without a fight.
