So you saw that Keith Urban jammed onstage with The Rolling Stones Friday night (May 3) at The Stones’ tour-opening show in L.A. How did that happen?
“Mick [Jagger] called me, literally, and said, ‘Do you want to sit in with us?’” Keith told late-night TV talk show host Conan O'Brien .
“And I said, ‘Let me think about it,’” a grinning Keith added. “It was fantastic. He said he wanted to do ‘Respectable,’ and before I knew it, I was at soundcheck at the arena.”
Because it was the tour opener, Keith said that soundcheck lasted two hours and then the show itself was more than two hours long.
“It’s amazing. Their stamina is insane.” Keith said. “Mick has such ferocity when he sings. To be inches away from him.”
That was not Keith’s first time playing with a rock band. Keith also revealed that he once was in a rock band when he was 16—for a week.
It was a heavy metal cover band called Fractured Mirror, but even then, Keith was into country and bluegrass, obsessed at the time with a guy named Ricky Skaggs.
“We’re playing a Judas Priest song and they throw me a solo and I do this chicken pickin’ guitar solo,” Keith said. “I had an identity crisis at a young age. They fired me.”
