After surviving the blind auditions and the battle rounds, Teams Adam and Shakira reached the next hurdle: the knockouts! It was a sudden-death face-off to stay in the competition, made all the more exciting by the fact that the artists had full control of their song choices. Some picked wisely, while others chose to belt out Celine Dion. Why, oh why?
Here’s a rundown of the surprise pairings and the “do-or-die” performances, beginning with Adam Levine, who looked dapper in his suit and tie and felt confident with the high level of competition among his singers, who were whittled down to the following:
The 19-year-old country artist, dubbed the “biggest surprise” on Adam’s team, blew away everyone—especially Blake Shelton—with her rendition of “I’m With You” by Avril Lavigne and sent the quirky folk duo Midas Whale packing.
The adorable coffeehouse singer whom Adam stole from Blake faced her new BFF and vocal opposite Amy Lynn Whitcomb and came out on top with what Blake called a “safe” but “consistent” performance of “Little Talks” by Of Monsters and Men.
“Why don’t you just come out here and punch me in the face?” Blake asked after Judith's performance. First, she picked Adam over him; and now she chose to sing Willie Nelson’s “Always on My Mind” and nailed it. Sorry, Orlando Dixon, you didn’t stand a chance.
Country boy Warren Stone got the boot when Sarah became Adam’s fourth and final pick after the other coaches oohed and aahed over her version of “Wild Horses” by The Rolling Stones.
As for newbie Shakira, she genuinely seemed distressed over having to cut her team in half. Gotta love her sweetness, but unfortunately not everyone can move onto the live playoffs. Here are the artists she ultimately chose:
Garrett stood out as a “star” to Blake, and Shakira agreed, choosing him over Nashville veteran Tawnya Reynold.
Facing off against Mary Miranda, this was a battle of the class pets, at least according to Blake, who was shocked that Shakira pitted these two favorites against each other. Mary, however, didn’t do herself any favors picking The Police’s “Every Breath You Take” and she lost to Kris and his moving version of Louis Armstrong's “What a Wonderful World.”
Karina was a steal from Team Adam and dominated the battle of the powerhouse Latinas, rocking out to “Are You Gonna Go My Way” by Lenny Kravitz, while Monique Abaddie sang Celine Dion’s “The Power of Love” and showed that she’s no Celine Dion, which, in this case, is a bad thing. For Monique at least.
Another steal from Adam, Sasha hit the stage with the Etta James standard “At Last” and gave her coach goose bumps—twice! “This is the best knockout round that I’ve seen so far,” said Blake, just before Shakira eliminated Shawna P. from the competition.
Next up: Teams Usher and Blake!
