If you’ve ever caught The Band Perry in concert, you might have heard them perform a cover of “Fat Bottomed Girls” by Queen. (If not, YouTube it.) The iconic British rock band—and its charismatic late singer, Freddie Mercury—is one of The Band Perry’s chief influences, and one that can be heard distinctly on the Pioneer cut “Forever Mine Nevermind.”
Neil claps, Reid cheers and Kimberly says, “Mission accomplished,” when that musical similarity is pointed out to them.
“That’s what we were going for,” Neil says.
“For this album, Queen played a huge part,” Reid adds. “We’ve always been a fan of Queen, and Kimberly thinks Freddie Mercury is the best frontman ever.”
Co-written with Brad Paisley when The Band Perry was on tour with him last year—this summer, they’ll hit the road with Rascal Flatts—“Forever Mine Nevermind” layers vocals upon vocals to achieve a deliriously echoey effect and features magical guitar work from Brad himself.
“He cut a lot of the guitars on the song,” Kimberly says. “We ended up finishing it at his farm in Nashville.”
The band is particularly proud of their vocals on the tune.
“It’s funny, in country music, we’re The Band Perry and we all play instruments, but [awards categories include us in] Vocal Groups. So we’re like, ‘Fine, we’ll take that vocal group to the nth degree!’” Reid says, laughing. “So we did and stacked as many vocals as we could.”
Freddie Mercury would be proud.
