Any new artist with a successful debut album will tell you that they fear their follow-up won’t compare. Having your entire life to write your first collection and just months to write the second often yields a weaker sophomore effort.
With their new release, Just Feels Good, Thompson Square is laughing in the face of fear. Whether they felt the pressure of having to deliver an equally compelling follow-up to their successful self-titled debut or they’ve just hit their musical stride is anyone’s guess. One thing is certain: They’ve one-upped themselves. And the energy on Just Feels Good is palpable, whatever inspired it.
The happily married couple of Keifer and Shawna Thompson is calling the songs on Just Feels Good “autobiographical,” so it’s no surprise the music is upbeat and positive, without being sappy or saccharin. It’s actually a great soundtrack for summer with a mix of hooky attitude songs like “Here We Go Again,” infectious singalongs like the crazy-fun “Testing the Water” and romantic ballads like “I Can’t Outrun You.” And speaking of autobiographical, the love story of Keifer and Shawna is actually set to music in “That’s So Me and You,” co-written by Keifer with Vicky McGehee and Kyle Jacobs.
Artists are prone to call whatever their new project is their “best yet.” As it should be. If you aren’t getting better, then stop. But if Thompson Square keeps this up, their next project should be titled Just Feels Better.
