In the past, country music videos were created to, in some way, enhance the songs they were made for. Sometimes the interpretations are literal and sometimes they’re conceptual—artsy imaging pieces that are just nice to see or stretch the viewer’s imagination.
With Eli Young Band’s video for “Say Goodnight,” consider yourself stretched.
The band and the video’s director, Brian Lazzaro, deserve a lot of credit for possibly creating the single most original and unique video in the history of country music, and maybe that was the goal for “Say Goodnight.” But it’s also a bit puzzling. Buying into the bizarre story line of a robot that has landed on earth and engages in a relationship with a human, one is left to question just what that relationship is. Parental? Intimate? It’s hard to tell. And if the robot is advanced enough to feel love or lust or whatever it is that makes its keypad light up with bouncy hearts, why is it unable to communicate?
One thing is certain, though, the performance shots of Eli Young Band’s handsome members, Mike Eli, James Young, Jon Jones and Chris Thompson, are lit beautifully, and the song is perfectly and romantically timed for Valentine’s Day.
