All things considered, Tyler Hubbard of Florida Georgia Line looked raring to go this morning over breakfast on the patio of the Hard Rock Hotel Cancun. The night before, he, bandmate Brian Kelley—both sporting oversized sombreros—and members of their band and film crew overran the Hard Rock's lobby bar, surprising hotel guests and sweepstakes winners. It was a much-needed moment to blow off some steam for FGL, who had been in Cancun since Monday, working practically nonstop on their new video for latest single "Get Your Shine On," the follow-up to the No. 1 smash "Cruise."
"We wanted this video to be something different, unique and something that not everybody else is doing," Tyler said. "And I think we did it."
To help accomplish that goal, the guys assembled at 4 a.m. in the lobby yesterday morning for a nearly two-hour drive to Tulum, where filming included scenes at the onetime home of notorious drug kingpin Pablo Escobar. The journey there, however, was anything but a cruise.
One of the band's two vans had a flat tire shortly after leaving Cancun. "We got a little freaked out to be honest with you. Because it was like 4 o'clock in the morning, pitch dark, not many road lights and three or four guys standing around outside [the van]," Tyler says. "We were like, 'This could be really sketchy right now.' But we stuck together and it all worked out."
A little over 24 hours later, Tyler and Brian were stepping back into a different van, this time to ferry them to the airport for their flight back to the U.S. They're due to rejoin Luke Bryan's Dirt Road Diaries Tour tomorrow night (Jan. 25) in Estero, Fla.—with memories of Cancun still fresh in their heads.
"Man, it's just beautiful," Tyler mused, just yards from the crystal-blue waters of the Caribbean Sea. "Beautiful people, beautiful beaches, and the Hard Rock Hotel was gorgeous. I loved everything about it."
