Note to these TV show singing contests: If you're looking for the next Simon Cowell, try the music teachers in Tullahoma, Tenn. Dustin Lynch ("Cowboys and Angels") said he never sang in high school chorus in Tullahoma—because he wasn't allowed.
Why? Turns out Dustin got a C in his vocal music class.
"Talk about being told 'no' right there and wanting to prove somebody wrong," Dustin tells ABC News Radio.
Dustin never had any singing lessons either. So how did he fine-tune that deep voice?
"It's just I think I grew up singing in these smoky bars in Nashville in, you know, four-hour shifts," he said. "My voice dropped kind of early in life, and I've always kind of had a deep voice, but I've learned to sing country music just from my heroes and trying to entertain a crowd on [Nashville's] Broadway."
