Nashville songwriter Bobby Carmichael has filed a federal lawsuit alleging that the 2009 single by Justin Moore, “Backwoods,” was stolen from him.
According to Nashville's daily newspaper The Tennessean, Carmichael claims to have written the song eight years ago with fiddle player Britton Curry. The song is credited to Justin, Jamie Paulin and songwriter/producer Jeremy Stover.
Carmichael alleges that the track has nearly identical lyrics, pitch and rhythm to the song he wrote with Curry. In 2003, Carmichael handed over the rights to Curry, who registered the song with the U.S. Copyright Office, according to the lawsuit.
Justin’s “Backwoods” single has been downloaded more than 300,000 times. The two writers are asking for $150,000 for each act of copyright infringement.
Justin and his record label, Big Machine Records, have declined to comment and have not filed a legal response. Both sides are slated to meet Oct. 1 before a judge in Nashville.
