Some Eric Church fans threw chairs, bottles and garbage onto the stage Friday night (June 1) in Buffalo, N.Y., after officials canceled the show late into the night, The Buffalo News reports .
Officials feared predictions for winds up to 50 miles an hour that had been forecast during bad weather that night. Similar winds caused a fatal scene last summer when staging blew over at an outdoor Sugarland concert.
"We twice manually lowered the stage in an effort to stabilize the structure so the show could go on," officials said afterward in a statement. "These actions did not, however, have the desired effect to reduce the risk to the performers or to the audience and, in fact, several key cords supporting the structure began to loosen or snap due to the high winds."
That didn't mollify some Eric Church fans, who threw whatever they could onto the stage after the announcement. Most fans left in an orderly manner right away.
Eric himself issued a statement saying he was bummed.
"I'm very bummed the show got canceled tonight," he said. "I've learned in doing this, that some things are out of your hands and this is one of those things. I owe the city of Buffalo one, and I intend to make good on that.
"To everyone out there, thanks for coming and standing in the rain and wind, and we intend to bring it when the time comes," he added.
