Despite the success, Joe Nichols' life hasn't been idyllic. Yes, he's has a platinum-selling career, loving wife and newborn baby daughter, but Joe’s journey from childhood to fatherhood has had its share of up and downs, including an abuse-filled childhood and ongoing struggles with alcoholism.
In fact, it was the high points in his life that sent him into destruction mode and, ultimately, in and out of rehab. “Those are the most dangerous times for me," Joe says on GAC's Backstory: Joe Nichols. "That’s when I want to destroy everything.”
Severe stage fright also contributed to his alcoholism, Joe contends. "I could do anything I wanted to do, with just a couple swigs of whiskey," he says.
In the first clip, Joe also talks about how a household with an abusive father led to reclusive teen years spent in his bedroom. "What was I gonna do? Come out of the bedroom to this hostile world where people beat the crap out of each other? Nah, I'll sit in my bedroom and make good use of my time," he says of the hours he spent listening to Merle Haggard and learning to sing.
