By now you’ve probably heard that Jake Owen popped the question to longtime girlfriend and video co-star Lacey Buchanan onstage at a hometown show in Vero Beach, Fla.
But before he even considered placing the 2.5-carat oval-cut diamond on the finger of his now fiancée, Lacey, Jake was faced with the one task that has forever caused terror in the hearts of men: He had to ask her father.
“The first time I met him, he said, ‘Look, if you have any plans whatsoever of breaking my daughter’s heart, you might as well let her go right now,'” Jake tells CountryWeekly.com with a laugh. “He told me that if she ever came crying to him that I had broken her heart, he would go ahead and hunt me down.”
And while many a man would have ran straight through the screen door at that point, Jake persevered. Four months later, he returned to ask Lacey’s father for permission to take her hand in marriage.
“It’s really hard for people to sometimes understand my business and my lifestyle,” says the 30-year-old. “I know any father of someone dating a guy like myself had to be a bit leery, but I told him that he had absolutely nothing to worry about.”
So now, the planning for the lavish wedding ceremony begins . . . or does it? “My life has always been about keeping things simple and I don’t see either one of us spending a long time planning a wedding,” he says. “I have a lot going on this summer touring with Kenny [Chesney] and Tim [McGraw] and a lot going into the fall and, well, we just love this time of the year. We are both from Florida, so we are thinking it will be a cool, laid-back sunrise service on the beach. We might have a guy playing a little nylon-string guitar or something. I bet our wedding doesn’t last for more than 10 or 15 minutes. We love the idea of starting the day fresh . . . a dawn-of-a-new-day sort of deal.”
