Keith Urban and wife Nicole Kidman regularly give their time toward charitable causes—Nicole is known for her work with the United Nations, while Keith's We're All for the Hall concert in Nashville benefiting the Country Music Hall of Fame is now in its fourth year. Now the couple is joining a growing anti-coal mining movement that hits close to their home in Australia.
The couple hung a sign on the gates of their home in the Southern Highlands area (located approximately 70 minutes from the Sydney airport) that reads, "No Coal or Coal Seam Gas." According to The Sunday Telegraph , an estimated 400 landholders in the area are campaigning against plans to augment coal and gas mining operations in highly valued agricultural areas or near residential areas.
"We sold them the sign for $20 when they visited the Moss Vale Farmers Market one Saturday morning on their last visit here," Southern Highlands Coal Action Group convenor Peter Martin tells the Australian newspaper.
Hume Coal possesses a 115-square-kilometers exploration permit, which was given in 1967, and began exploring land in May 2011. According to Peter, more than 460 properties in the area were built atop land held under the coal mining and coal seam gas permits.
