About 30 years ago, Trace Adkins had a pretty big crush on Kim Mulkey, the pretty girl who played hoops for their school, Louisiana Tech, the same school where Trace played a little football.
“She had long braided pigtails and she was phenomenal,” Trace said wistfully. “All the jocks ate at the training table and that’s where I would see her, but she was a rock star and I couldn’t talk to her.”
Trace finally talked to her Saturday (Feb. 11) when he sang the national anthem in Waco, Tex., before the Baylor-Texas A&M women's basketball game, the Associated Press reports . Turns out that pretty girl, Kim Mulkey, now coaches Baylor's Lady Bears.
The coach walked Trace out to midcourt, got a kiss on her hand and walked back to the bench before he sang.
The two had fun with reporters beforehand. Turns out Kim only sort of noticed Trace during their college days.
“I didn’t know him because he was some superstar football player, but what I did know, there were only two athletes who were ever that tall at Louisiana Tech, at that training table,” Kim said. “And it was Trace and Karl Malone. . . . So I knew, kind of, who he was. But not to the extent that I really paid attention.”
So how was this crush revealed? About a year ago, in concert, Trace talked about Kim before he did a cover of "One in a Million"—and Kim's sister was in the crowd.
"it was just off the cuff and I was just telling a story, I never intended for it to blow up and turn into this," Trace told reporters.
