A jury ruled late Tuesday (Jan. 24) that an Oklahoma hospital has to give Garth Brooks back his $500,000—plus another $500,000 in damages—because the hospital failed to build a women's health center in the name of Garth's late mom.
"We wanted to show them [hospital administrators] not to do that anymore to anyone else," jury member Beverly Lacy told the Associated Press . Garth said he gave the half-million dollars to Integris Canadian Valley Regional Hospital to name the center for his mom, Colleen Brooks, who died from cancer in 1999.
But hospital administrators said Garth gave the money with no strings attached.
The jury ruled for Garth, and he feels vindicated.
"I no longer feel like I'm crazy," he said.
The hospital spokesman, Hardy Watkins, said they were disappointed, "particularly with the jury's decision to award damages above and beyond the $500,000."
Garth said he was simply trying to honor the memory of his mother.
"This little pistol, she deserves nothing but good," he said.
