Despite a huge press push from star Dolly Parton, opening weekend for Joyful Noise didn't have producers jumping for joy.
The film, co-starring Queen Latifah, took in $13.8 million in ticket sales, good for third place behind Mark Wahlberg's Contraband and the 3-D reissue of 1991's Beauty and the Beast, which each took in more than $20 million.
Reviewers shared filmgoers' lack of enthusiasm.
Entertainment Weekly gave the movie a B-.
A San Fransico Chronicle reviewer wrote, "Here's a film that makes a happy ruckus. . . . Like most ruckuses, it is frequently loud and not always intelligible."
