Rodney Atkins went searching for, and found, his birth mother in 2008, shortly after becoming spokesman for the National Council for Adoption, the singer reveals to the Associated Press . The reunion happened in Nashville.
“It hit me at that moment, walking in that room, getting to know her,” Rodney told the AP. “She’s a wonderful, beautiful lady. I realized that the reason I needed to do that did not have anything to do with my parents. I’m glad I did that really, really, really for her. She’s been carrying that around, wondering what happened, and I could tell it was such a relief.”
Rodney’s birth mother got pregnant with him at 19, hiding it from her family and deciding on adoption instead of abortion.
“I just wanted to tell her thank you, because she had some other alternatives to end that situation,” he said.
“I might not be here. So you don’t want to take it for granted. . . . She kept saying, ‘I’m sorry.’ I kept saying, ‘Thank you.’”
Rodney’s adoptive parents have gotten to know his birth mother, even bringing the birth mother some photo albums of Rodney growing up from infancy to stardom to let her get to know the son she gave up for adoption.
Rodney said his birth mother learned that her son loved Los Angeles Dodgers first baseman Steve Garvey when Rodney was growing up. So for Rodney’s birthday two years ago, his birth mother gave him an autographed Steve Garvey jersey, baseball card and a baseball.
“She told me, ’You have to understand, Rodney, to me this is your first birthday.’”
