Yes, Toby Keith is the guy who sings that we'll put a boot in your ass, it's the American way.
But his stated views on gays and immigrants have earned him some props from the normally left-leaning New York Times.
In an editorial printed Monday (Oct. 10) , the newspaper notes that Toby has played “Made in America” on a made-in-Japan Takamine guitar in concert.
“[That] has earned Mr. Keith some criticism. I see it as a sign of self-assuredness, an open mind and a healthy capacity for irony,” writer Lawrence Downes notes.
He goes on to refer to Toby’s recent public statements that he has no problem with openly gay soldiers and that the battle against illegal aliens should focus on keeping out terrorists, not on hardworking Mexicans.
“Mr. Keith doesn’t easily fit the stereotype of the jingoistic country star,” the editorial states. “To me, he seems like someone whose roots actually run through the country, not through the Manhattan offices of Fox News.
“How’s that for country values: Speak your mind, but respect others. To be an American, take the best the world has to offer, from guitars to working families, and call them American, too.”
