Vince Gill, a longtime supporter of Nashville’s Belmont University, received an honorary doctor of humanities degree over the weekend during Belmont's spring commencement ceremony.
“I led by my ears. I didn’t see my future; I heard my future,” Vince said to graduates after accepting his degree. “I learned everything I knew how to do by listening, and I found it to be the most important thing in my life. I never in my wildest dreams thought that a day like this would happen. My college experience was somewhat similar to yours in that I spent all my college years in a beer joint, playing gigs. It was a great one, I never had to study one time,” he quipped.
He also had some advice for Belmont’s graduates. “You learn more when you fail than when you succeed. It’s so easy to react when you succeed, but when you fail, it builds your character.”
