On “Super Country Cowboy,” Rockie declares himself an entirely new breed of singer: a super country, evangelic, rockabilly psychedelic cowboy. The rest of his self-titled debut suggests nothing so original as that. No, Rockie is covering familiar pop-country musical turf with these 12 tracks—including the hit single “Lipstick” and follow-up “Do We Still,” both of which chronicle crumbling relationships from at least somewhat fresh angles. What really sets Rockie apart is natural openheartedness and a way with a telling detail—neither makes him a “Super Country Cowboy,” but they do make this first effort worth a listen.
