For many artists, it’s difficult enough to come up with an album’s worth of solid material. Vince Gill’s audacious, ambitious These Days sets its sights four times higher—it’s a four-CD set featuring 43 new songs, a two-hour-and-45- minute avalanche of music that would have buried a lesser talent. Its creation is a self-imposed challenge to Vince’s skills as a singer, songwriter, guitarist and visionary, one that few others could or would take on.
So the big question is, does he pull it off? And the big answer is a resounding yes. These Days separates out each of Vince’s stylistic strengths—rock-tinged guitar wizardry, pop-touched balladry, back-porch bluegrass and traditional country—and gives each a disc of its own. All hold the listener’s attention thanks to the care in the songwriting, the endless appeal of Vince’s voice and the long list of well-chosen guest stars who pop in to add variety. But make no mistake: This is Vince’s day in the sun.
