When is Lynyrd Skynyrd not Lynyrd Skynyrd anymore? Following the tragic deaths of keyboardist Billy Powell and bass player Leon Wilkeson, guitarist Gary Rossington is now the sole remaining member of the legendary band that bore that name proudly during its 1970s heyday. God & Guns, despite the recorded presence of Billy, sounds little like that group—the onetime fleet-footed boogie of the classic unit is replaced here by bombastic hard rock, and the nuanced sociopolitical perspective of late leader Ronnie Van Zant’s thoughtful lyrics is supplanted by blunt, relentless liberal-bashing. The band heard on God & Guns is a solid riff-rock outfit, but is it Skynyrd?
