On her second release, former Nashville Star contestant Whitney Duncan adds her bluesy touch to the types of contemporary pop-country songs favored by Kellie Pickler and Carrie Underwood.
A solid tunesmith, Whitney co-wrote every song here, including the guitar-laced “Coming Home to You” and the passionately honest “Open Road” (My story’s out there still untold / Out on this open road). Her mature, strong and soulful voice has earned her duet opportunities with Kenny Rogers and Jimmy Wayne, but Whitney is still finding her own voice.
She imitates Shania Twain a little too strongly on “Little by Little” and brings to mind Heidi Newfield on “So Sorry Mama.”
Meanwhile, she’s more distinctive on “Right Road Now” and the rowdy kiss-off “Bed That You Made.”
Whitney has the vocal prowess and songwriting skills necessary for a long country career, as long as she stays on the right road to finding herself.
