This disc marks Steve’s first all-instrumental album, pairing the richness of an elegantly played guitar with some of music’s best-known melodies. He begins with a lush rendering of “It Came Upon a Midnight Clear,” and later, offers an unusually warm rendition of “Santa Claus Is Coming to Town,” played on a Jerry Jones Baritone Guitar. Steve’s last album was a tribute to guitar picker extraordinaire Chet Atkins, and that influence is felt here as well on the charming “White Christmas,” performed on a Gibson Chet Atkins Country Gentleman model, given to Steve by Chet himself. He used the same axe on “Winter Wonderland,” loosely mimicking the style in which Chet performed the song back in the early 1960s. Other Christmas classics, including “Deck the Halls,” “Silent Night” and “The Christmas Song,” are also present, helping create an understated collection perfectly suited for background music at holiday parties, or even as accompaniment for holiday music junkies who can’t help singing along.
