Billy, his wife Bettie and two of his band members were killed in an auto accident May 21, as they were driving from Alabama to Nashville after a show. The Walkers’ 21-year-old grandson Joshua Brooks was critically injured in the accident and remains in an Alabama hospital. Cards of condolences may be sent to: Grand Ole Opry Administration, 2804 Opryland Dr., Nashville, TN, 37214.
Brad Paisley recently paid tribute to the Opry legend. “He was one of the nicest, most down-to-earth men you could ever have met,” Brad noted. “He was the first person to introduce me on the Opry stage, and he came to my gold [album] party—my first one—to show his support.” Brad added that, “The Walkers were as solid and wonderful a couple as I have ever seen.”
Ricky Skaggs also remembered Billy as “a gentle man” who worked hard to uphold the traditions of the Grand Ole Opry.
