He was 77. The Walkers were driving toward Tennessee on Interstate 65 south of Montgomery, Ala., when their van overturned, according to Alabama state troopers. Billy had performed Saturday night, May 20, in Foley, Ala. Known as "The Tall Texan," Billy hit No. 1 in 1962 with "Charlie's Shoes" and Top 5 with such singles as "Cross the Brazos at Waco," "Ramona" and "She Goes Walking Through My Mind." He joined the Grand Ole Opry in 1960 and continued to perform frequently on the show. The band members killed in the accident were Charles Lilly Jr., and Daniel Patton Sr., while the Walkers' grandson Joshua Brooks was critically injured. Funeral arrangements will be announced shortly.
