Charlie Daniels, Rodney Crowell and late country songwriter Mickey Newbury were among those saluted at the fifth annual Americana Honors and Awards, held on Friday night at Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium. Charlie was given the Spirit of Americana Free Speech Award, while Rodney earned a lifetime achievement award and Mickey’s mother accepted his posthumous President's Award for career achievement. Neil Young was named Artist of the Year, while James McMurtry took Album of the Year for Childish Things and Song of the Year for “We Can’t Make It Here Anymore.” Other winners included The Drive-By Truckers, Nashville guitarist Kenny Vaughan and New Orleans producer and pianist Allen Toussaint. Performers included many of the honorees, along with Elvis Costello, Rosanne Cash and Vince Gill, among others.
