The entrants, some of whom had camped out since early in the morning, formed a line that stretched several blocks down Nashville’s 2nd Ave. One contestant, 18-year-old Emily Reiners, drove several hours from the small town of Atlanta, Ill., to enter the talent competition, which enters its fifth season in January. The most popular audition songs seemed to be Clint Black’s “Killin’ Time” for the men, and Patsy Cline’s classic “Walkin’ After Midnight” for the ladies. The contestant numbers have increased in all the audition cities, according to Jeff Boggs, one of the show’s producers. “We had over 800 in Dallas, up from last year’s 550,” says Jeff. “We had more than 1,000 in New York.” The regional finals will be held in Nashville, Nov. 1–3.
