The trio—Natalie Maines, Emily Robison and Martie Maguire—agrees that the smaller crowds are due to backlash from Natalie’s anti-President Bush comments in 2003. “There is a visible difference to be sure, but the record is selling great,” said Martie, referring to the group’s current CD Taking the Long Way. “I attribute that a lot to the fact that a lot of people don’t even know we’re on tour. Some country stations wouldn’t even (run) our paid advertising.” The Chicks chronicle their problems with country radio and the death threats they received in a new documentary film, Shut Up and Sing, playing in theaters around the country.
