The singer/songwriter was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon after shooting a man Saturday night, March 31, and wounding him. Shaver’s attorney Joseph A. Turner of Austin, Texas, has stated that his client shot the man, who has not been identified, in self-defense. The man allegedly followed Shaver into the parking lot and was drunk, aggressive and had a knife. The victim was reportedly shot in the cheek. Shaver was released from the McLennan County Jail in Waco after posting $50,000 bond. Ironically, Billy Joe’s Greatest Hits CD, featuring classics like “Old Chunk of Coal” and “I Been to Georgia on a Fast Train,” hit retail stores April 3.
