Nashville’s daily newspaper The Tennessean cites an article in People magazine, written by Tennessean columnist Beverly Keel, in which Billy reveals years of physical abuse as a child. Billy returned to Nashville on July 26 after completing a 30-day trauma recovery program in Arizona. He has cancelled nearly 100 dates to continue working with therapists who specialize in childhood trauma. Billy tells People that he was physically abused by his first stepfather for several years, which led to violent behavior in grade school. “When you are taught to hate, you carry that with you,” Billy says in the article. “Even today, I call myself 98 percent laid-back, but 2 percent is Little Billy, my inner child that’s hurt, sad and furious because he was never taken care of.” Billy adds that he still has anger issues and is seeking help with that part of his personality.
