Though Tim McGraw has a bevy of lighthearted songs such as "Do You Want Fries With That?" and "Down on the Farm" to showcase his fun-loving side, the singer admits that in recent years, he's been naturally drawn to more somber material, such as "Live Like You Were Dying" or "If You're Reading This."
"I never aim for anything like that going in," Tim tells the Charlotte News Observer . "But I do like the heavier material, stuff that leans to the heavy side, gets inside you and stays there. I just record songs I gravitate toward. And as you get older, you have a little more life experience and can do those songs with some credibility."
He says that his ability to get into the role of a character has helped him not only in his music career, but in his several character roles in movies such as The Blind Side and Friday Night Lights. "In that moment of singing a song," Tim continues, "you're trying to create a character that people will want to walk through the song with to see what happens. Same with a movie. Whether you're the good guy, the bad guy or just a guy, you're trying to get people interested in what happens and the end result."
Tim's fans will get to see more of his acting soon—the movie Country Strong with actress Gwyneth Paltrow and actor Garrett Hedlund, who also starred with Tim in Friday Night Lights. Tim stars as a husband-manager to a fallen country singer (Gwyneth) who tries to resurrect her career.
