After singing It's been a lovely cruise, I'm sorry it's ended Jimmy Buffett crashed off the stage after his final Sydney concert last night (Jan. 26) and was rushed to hospital with a head injury, according to The Daily Telegraph .
Shocked fans at the sell-out concert at the Hordern Pavilion were urged to leave the auditorium by Jimmy's Australian tour manager, Michael Chugg, as the 64-year-old entertainer lay on the floor in front of the first row of seating waiting for paramedics and an ambulance to arrive. He was rushed to a hospital 30 minutes after the accident.
Jimmy's sister, Lucy Buffett, told WKRG-TV in Mobile, Ala., that “it was a really scary fall. He is resting in the hospital in Sydney. He's going to be okay."
Audience member Dan Bateman told The Daily Telegraph that Jimmy fell face first off the stage. “We were in the 10th row and it looked like he did a massive face plant after his encore and pretty much didn't get up,” the witness said. “We were told to leave the premises. No one really wanted to leave because everyone was anxious to know if he survived the fall. Everyone was pretty horrified.”
According to a statement on Jimmy's website, the singer is improving. "As you probably already know, Jimmy had an accident while performing in Sydney last night and was taken to the hospital. The doctors say he is doing well and will be released tomorrow. More info as we get it, and thank you for all of your well-wishes!"
The show was part of Jimmy's first Australian tour in 20 years.
