Who’s Gonna Fill Their Legendary Shoes?
On the surface, Cash and Kenny have little in common. One kicked out footlights in boots, the other kicks up sand in flip-flops. But both J.C. and K.C. accomplished the rare feat of creating definitive personalities through music. For Kenny, it’s about sand and surf, yes, but it’s also about freeing one’s mind. Which is exactly what Johnny was doing. On one of Kenny’s new songs, he teams up with reggae group the Wailers, and you can’t help but think that Cash would have taken the same risk. (He did, in fact, cover Bob Marley at one point in his career.) In all of the Caribbean sunshine, it’s easy to lose sight of Kenny the artist, but it’s there. Rest assured, Kenny has an icon’s vision—it’s just often one in sunglasses.
