Who’s Gonna Fill Their Legendary Shoes?
Haggard, Campbell, Waylon, Willie. Aside from being brilliant singers and songwriters, these men upped the ante by also being dazzling guitarists. Likewise, Keith Urban. His guitar skills alone elevate him to elite status among today’s artists and make the case for Keith being able to look forward to a long and respected career. Even his lightest of songs, “You Gonna Fly,” for instance, boast guitar fireworks. But Keith isn’t about the showy: His solos and fills are tasteful, nuanced. Even when he’s playing on someone else’s song. If there’s a more appropriately evocative solo this year than the one on Tim McGraw’s “Highway Don’t Care,” we haven’t heard it. Keith also brings it live, night after night turning in some of country’s most electric shows. Every time he shreds his way into the crowd and then signs and gives away his guitar to a fan, we get chills down our spines. You can’t ask for much more than that.
