In 2001, when I was single and lonesome and heartbroken, I played a show at the Station Inn [in Nashville] and made a Hatch Show Print for it, called “The Terminally Lonesome Valentine’s Day Show.” You were required to wear all black to get in the door. But Valentines’ Day is the toughest holiday for a guy. It’s a made-up holiday and there is no way to win. If you’re dating a girl, there is all this pressure on you to come up with the right gift. If you underplay it, you’re in a lot of trouble. If you overplay it, then you’ve moved the relationship along a little further than you wanted to. That’s why you get married, so you don’t have to worry about things like Valentine’s Day!
