Toby Keith Honored by USO in Las Vegas

Toby Keith is perpetually a man of service, in addition to being a massive star. While in Las Vegas for the ACM Awards, Toby performed at the taping of the TV special ACM Presents: An All-Star Salute to the Troops, continuing his longstanding commitment to the U.S. armed forces.

This time around, the troops repaid the favor. According to Nashville newspaper The Tennessean, Toby finished up his performance of “American Soldier” at the event and was shaking hands with service members onstage when a representative from USO took the stage. To his surprise, Toby was presented with the Spirit of the USO Award, having performed more than 200 shows for members of the armed forces.

Fans will hopefully get to see the moment in the special, which airs May 20 at 8 p.m. on CBS.

Toby’s service is also having a local impact on his town of residence, Norman, Okla., with his annual fundraiser and golf tournament to support OK Kids Korral. The event kicks off May 16 at Riverwind Casino in Norman, with silent and live auctions—Toby will serve as auctioneer—as well as food and entertainment all night.

The next morning (May 17) 200 golfers will hit the links at the Belmar Golf Club, also in Norman, for the 11th Annual Toby Keith & Friends Golf Classic. Celebrity duffers joining the fun include Dermontti Dawson, Tony Casillas, Roy Williams, Sam Bowie, Nancy Lieberman and Red Steagall.

The weekend of activities benefits the Toby Keith Foundation’s OK Kids Korral, which offers a cost-free home away from home for pediatric cancer patients and their families. Since it opened in January, the Korral has hosted more than 75 families.
