Time Off Is Tough to Come By for Eli Young Band

But they did get some R ’n’ R in Punta Cana.

Fans of course know that Texas-based Eli Young Band (Mike Eli, James Young, Jon Jones and Chris Thompson) has long been one of the busiest live acts in country music, spending a majority of their time on the road since forming. Now that both Mike and Jon are fathers, they’re having to reevaluate that approach, but with their new album, 10,000 Towns, hitting stores this Tuesday, March 4, time off is not in the cards right now.

“I think that’s something we’re starting to realize is that the more successful we are, the busier we’re gonna be, that’s the hazard of the job,” said bassist Jon Jones at a recent tour stop in Chattanooga, Tenn. “[We are] trying to embrace that as much as we can, but yet try to find open pockets where we can make it home.”

With the lead single from 10,000 Towns, “Drunk Last Night,” hitting No. 1 and the guys signed on to upcoming tours with Darius Rucker and Jake Owen, among others, those pockets will have to be carefully planned.

“We’re having a conversation about a couple days off in April right now,” said Jon, with no trace of sarcasm. “That’s going back and forth.”

And even though the guys recently jetted off to the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Punta Cana, Mexico, to watch the Super Bowl with fans—other artists of the Big Machine Label Group family will fly back to Mexico for the label’s ultimate fan party, Live Country Experience, June 14–19 at the Hard Rock Hotel Riviera Maya—it’s still time spent away from their families.

“The thing that comes with success is that you have to make sure you prioritize your time,” added singer Mike Eli. “We’ve always been that road dog band that says, ‘We’re gonna take every opportunity and we’re gonna run through every door that gets opened for us.’ When you have a kid, you have to remember that you can’t run through every door that opens for you. Your responsibility as a father, now that we have families, you have to prioritize that.”
