Keifer and Shawna Thompson, better known as the husband-and-wife duo Thompson Square, gathered with a crowd of friends, family and industry colleagues at the Nashville offices of performance rights organization BMI yesterday afternoon (May 3) to celebrate their first No. 1 single, “Are You Gonna Kiss Me Or Not.”

The party at BMI recognized one of the song’s writers, BMI’s Jim Collins, and the celebration was followed immediately by another party at ASCAP, where songwriter David Lee Murphy was honored. The couple, who met in 1996, was clearly touched and moved by their success and the support from their friends and family.

In addition to a cheese-and-cracker spread, guests delightedly helped themselves to a buffet Hershey's Kisses. Both Keifer and Shawna struggled to keep their composure, holding back tears as they thanked industry friends and family during the BMI party. “We can’t hardly believe this. We’re criers, so get ready for it,” Keifer warned as he began tearing up. “This means absolutely everything to me and Shawna. We never thought this would happen. This has changed our lives.”

Shawna, also crying, said, “If it weren’t for Keifer, I wouldn’t even be standing here today. I thank God for you every day,” before adding, “I should have worn waterproof mascara.”

“Me, too,” Keifer said jokingly.

After accepting awards from BMI, Country Radio Broadcasters and the Country Music Association, Shawna and Keifer presented their parents with plaques commemorating the chart-topping success of “Are You Gonna Kiss Me Or Not.”
