Taylor Swift Headlines MTV’s Video Music Awards

Country's superstar closes out the VMAs with “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together.”

With swagger, sweetness and just a touch of sexiness, Taylor Swift closed out this year's MTV Video Music Awards in Los Angeles with the first-ever live performance of "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together," the debut single from her upcoming album, Red.

Sporting a retro nautical-striped top and shorts, and backed by a band wearing plush-animal costumes, the Country Music Association's reigning Entertainer of the Year staked her claim as the quintessential crossover artist. (It's hard to imagine any other country star so capably commanding a crowd of U.K. boy bands, hip-hop divas and pop illuminati.) Whether strutting in unison with her backup dancers, donning and then tossing sunglasses, or eventually diving into the arms of the crowd at the song's conclusion, Taylor was clearly in her comfort zone—both onstage and backstage.

Just prior to her performance, she tweeted, "VMA dressing room report: exceptional snack selection. SCORE."

We can't say the same for Taylor's onetime beau, Twilight star Taylor Lautner, who did his best to remain stoic when the camera captured him in the audience. Like, ever.
