At 5:55 p.m., local time, Jamboree workers were warned of an unconfirmed tornado touchdown near Nisku with winds that might be headed their way. Billy Currington was on the stage at the time and was getting ready to wrap up his set. “We immediately let him know that he had to get off the stage so we could clear the concert bowl," said Larry Werner, a producer with Panhandle Productions, Ltd. "Our stage manager and myself were on the stage at the time the wind hit." Spectators were already fleeing the open-air concert bowl as the sky turned dark and the wind blew violently. Between 5:57 p.m. and 6 p.m., a gust knocked down the scaffold-type stage. One person was killed and as many as 75 others were injured as the stage collapsed. Billy suffered a mild concussion, scrapes and bruises and was released from a hospital Sunday morning, Aug. 2. “I wish nobody was hurt,” Werner said. “I wish it never happened, but it did and now we have to deal with it.” The final day of the Big Valley Jamboree, scheduled for Sunday, Aug. 2, was canceled. "The boys and I are very grateful to be home and for life itself," said Billy in a message via Twitter. He added later from his home in Nashville, "My heart goes out to the family of Donna Moore, who was killed, and all of the other fans who were hurt on Saturday."
