RECORDING STUDIO BECOMES HISTORIC LANDMARK

One day after Sam Phillips died, Sun Studios has become a historic landmark.

The building was honored on July 31st, 2003, as the birthplace of Sun Records - the record label which launched the careers of Elvis Presley, BB King, Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis and Johnny Cash.

In 1969 Sam sold Sun Records to producer Shelby Singleton of Nashville. The Sun studio on Union Avenue in Memphis is currently a tourist attraction. It is the first time a recording studio has been given the historic landmark status.

At the induction ceremony, Senate Majority Leader Bill First said, "By designating Sun Studio as a National Historic Landmark, we also pay tribute to Sam Phillips and his musical legacy."
