REBA ON RELATIONSHIPS

Reba McEntire has spent a large portion of her life being controlled by the domineering men in her life, but these days she can look back on her experiences with a healthy attitude.

Reba says that her father was a strict disciplinarian, and that she was dominated by her first husband, Charles Battles.

"I married a rodeo cowboy very much like daddy," says Reba. "I don't know why I stayed with him. Charlie tried to control me. With Charlie it was, 'Do what I say you need to do.' "

Charlie also told her that she'd have to quit her singing career if she wanted to have children, because he was not going to change diapers, and after she was voted Entertainer of the Year in 1986, informed her that she'd "pretty much peaked."

Now Reba has a new life in Nashville, married to fellow musician Narvel Blackstock, with an 11-year-old son, Shelby.

"Some men try to brainwash their women into thinking that no other man would ever want them," says Reba.

"Men treat women that way out of insecurity, so they'll stay with them. It's getting into those relationships that makes your life such a living hell"
