Parmalee Musta Had a Good Time
The Parmalee Festival Tour kicks off.
Fair and festival season has started and the first stop on the Parmalee Festival Tour—Country Thunder Arizona—is officially history.
And, like history, there are definite moments that the boys in the band—Matt, Scott, Barry and Josh—won't forget.
“I don’t know if it had anything to do with us, but the party vibe was definitely going on,” Josh says, laughing. “I saw some of the craziest stuff I’ve ever seen. Literally.” Besides spotting some groups of enthusiastic fans for whom clothing was optional, Barry remembers, "There was guy and a girl, and the guy said, ‘Hey, y’all are going to want to see this.’ So, obviously I looked. The girl had a bottle of liquor and she took a shot. And as soon as she did, the guy threw water in her face and slapped her. That was the whole ritual. It wasn’t a hard slap.”
Besides seeing some . . . um . . . sights, the fellas met some great fans and made some genuine connections. Josh says, “You get out there and everybody looks the same. They all have on cowboy hats, no shirt, everybody’s drinking beer and raising hell. And you don’t really think about who they are in their day-to-day life, they’re just a bunch of drunk rednecks. And then we’re hanging out with this one crowd and they’re wild and they’re taking shots and slamming beers, and he’s like, ‘Yeah, we’re all dental students. We put our suits on Monday and go back to working in people’s mouths.’”
Performing was part of the weekend, too. After their set on the main stage at Country Thunder, the boys picked up their guitar cases and went to play an acoustic set in the KMLE concert tent. Matt remembers, “It was greasy and dusty and dirty and hot in there, but everybody’s right up front and they’re singing. And it was like, this is the connection that’s real. These people know the words, they’re hanging out, they’re loving it.”
There are plenty more chances to see Parmalee and get in on the party. Check the band's website for upcoming festival dates.
The group also learned what they need in their country music festival survival kit. They suggest packing water, sunscreen, shorts and cold beer to optimize your festival experience.
