Nicole Kidman Cried Hearing Keith Urban's First Words After Vocal Rest

"If that doesn't bring you closer, you're not breathing," says Nicole.

Keith Urban's first words after recovering from vocal cord surgery brought both he and wife Nicole Kidman to tears. “I was there for his first words, and then we cried,” she tells W Magazine. “How many people experience their husband’s first words? If that doesn’t bring you closer, you’re not breathing.”

“Three weeks of no sound—no laughing, no coughing, no sneezing, nothing," she says of the recovery. "He could write things down, and he would scribble away."

Nicole says that ultimately the experience strengthened their bond, especially when Keith was allowed to end his vocal rest, but that didn't keep the two from squabbling on occasion. “You can still fight when someone can’t talk. When he disagreed with me, he would write, ‘This is unacceptable.’” she says jokingly.

Nicole talked to W Magazine to promote her new HBO film, Hemingway & Gellhorn.
