Mel Tillis Gets Arts Medal From the P-p-p-president

"I didn't know there were anymore awards left to win," Mel says. "I'm very thankful and what an honor!"

Mel Tillis got the highest honor given to artists from the U.S. government on Monday (Feb. 13).

He and seven others in the arts—including actor Al Pacino—got National Medals of Arts from President Obama and first lady Michelle Obama.

"I've had a blessed career, and that has been acknowledged in many ways over the years," Mel said in a statement. "I was pleasantly surprised when I got the call because I didn't know there were anymore awards left to win. I'm very thankful and what an honor!"

Other country artists who have a National Medal of Arts include George Jones, Minnie Pearl and Johnny Cash.
