Mel Tillis Is Eager to Tour Again After His Heart Surgery
Following a stint in the hospital after emergency heart surgery in March, Mel Tillis is well on his way to recovery. His quadruple-bypass surgery occurred after Mel, 81, had been suffering from chest pains for several months. Once doctors discovered the problem, Mel was admitted to surgery and released a little more than a week later.
“After about a week, I was ready to go home,” Mel tells Country Weekly in our exclusive chat with him.
However, Mel found out he was still a bit frail once he was back in the comfort of his Nashville home. “So I was sitting at home, and I got up to use the restroom and I fell,” he explains. “I punctured one of my ribs, so they sent me back over there for two or three more days. They took X-rays and all those things, but I'm on the road to recovery now.”
Mel started his rehab in Nashville, but since has relocated to Florida, where he has a ranch in Ocala, to continue his recovery. During the past couple of months, Mel has been touched deeply by the outpouring of love and support from his fans. “I’ve been hearing from fans from all over the world,“ he says, smiling. “Australia, New Zealand . . . everywhere! They’ve been praying for me! I miss them all so much, and I can’t wait to get back out there on the road to thank them in person!”
